From Greg, on the Proletas origin story:
In 2016, I was a few more years into my personal fitness journey. I had started CrossFit on my own, enjoyed the work, and then joined a class. And that changed everything. I enjoyed finding someone to pace, or someone to chase. The community was electrifying. I realized that to get better, it took more than just working out for an hour. It meant paying attention about what you do the other 23 hours of the day. Like what you are eating, and when you are eating it. And recovery.
I had also started listening to God and paying attention to the universe again at this point in my life. I was looking for a way to help support my family, outside of my 40+ hour work week. It was after a particularly hot and sticky gym session at CrossFit Heat in downtown Dallas, Texas, where this idea for a healthier, better for you ice cream bar came to me.
I was eating greek yogurt mixed with berries and walnuts as my post workout, because I had learned that after a hard workout session, your body is primed for nutrient uptake, which helps muscle growth and repair, supports strength, all the good things that go along with muscle. Honestly, I still have this same thing as a snack today.
But that day, the bitter tang of yogurt wasn't what I wanted. I wanted something cold, and delicious, and healthy. Something that would support my body, versus inflaming it further and blunting healthy gains. And the idea for a protein paleta was given to me. The Lord works in mysterious ways. In case its a new word to you, paleta is what the ice cream bars on a stick are called in Mexico. They can be cream based, or fruit and ice. And man, are they good. But they aren't exactly a health food. Fun Fact: the direct translation of "paleta" means little stick.
When you ask, you best be ready to receive. I took this gift, this idea that I was now entrusted with, and began the process. I mixed up what I had at the house, and what I could find, until i came up with something that fit into the macronutrient profile that I liked. It had an ample amount of protein, and it had some quick digesting carbohydrates to assist with transporting that protein into your system. But how did it taste?
My kids, all four of them, were the metric on taste. When they said, "Hey Dad, this is pretty good, can we have another?," I knew then that we were on to something. Our first flavor was strawberry. And we have been working to make our better for you, protein ice cream bars, a reality.
We sell these bars online, and at gyms through their pro shops. We go to fitness events and set up a pop up shop there too. We still believe that the one of the best times to eat our protein ice cream bars is after a serious workout, so we try to meet you to you at the place where we can benefit you the most. The second best time to eat a Proleta high protein ice cream bar is anytime, like right now even.
We are a family owned, small business, based out of a small town outside of Dallas, Texas, and we can't wait to meet you. Thanks for looking around the site, and if there's anything we can do for you, please feel free to drop us a line! [email protected]
